New Beginnings: When Moving Forward Means Leaving the Past Behind Promises Behavioral Health

Strathmore House

After all, some people may not be good candidates for friendship, but might be better as casual acquaintances. Use discretion, but be courteous, polite, open and willing to engage in conversation – if the opportunity permits. Even saying hello to a newcomer in the rooms of recovery is something that you can easily do. You may not feel like it, not at first, but give it time and a little practice and you’ll soon figure out that it doesn’t hurt you to be a little more outgoing and friendly. To the extent that you have common interests and likes, keep in mind that these may be just the right choices for friendship – as long as the feeling is mutual.

Recovery journey is never easy, we are here to help in any possible way. Having a stable job, having stable financial situation and helping us get back on track and building for future really helps. The job coach of our partner agency comes to coach any guests that are looking for jobs. We also work with local temp agencies, contractors and other employers. Having a recovery community to be part of is crucial in early sobriety. When you move into one of our houses, you’re not just moving into a sober house, you’re moving into a recovery community.

New Beginning Guests are required to engage in some sort of community service work. As Strathmore House House we believe in family, and we make the promise Review Strathmore House to anyone who comes to us that you are family when you come to one of our houses.

Community Volunteer Opportunities

You cannot go through life comparing your recovery with someone else’s. If you struggle to get past the first few days and see someone who has just celebrated a year in recovery, do not be mad at where you are. As individuals in recovery, we are fighting the same war. As someone who has been in recovery for nearly 30 years, I have discovered that there will be days when things do not go as planned. Perhaps your job is not going in the direction you had planned, and you did not get a promotion that you felt you deserved. The important thing is to not fall back into a life of addiction.

  1. What you have done by going through treatment to overcome your addiction took a great deal of courage and determination.
  2. This could come in the form of an intervention, conducted by a professional interventionist.
  3. You are also not to blame if he or she refuses treatment.
  4. It will take more courage for you to walk away from the past, but it is something that you absolutely have to be willing to do.
  5. It is also important to remember that choices can be changed.

It could have been when your binge drinking nearly killed you. Many amazing things have happened to me since February 4, 2008; it was a day that changed my life forever. Today I am a father of two amazing boys, Ricky and Carson, whom I want to set a great example for. I decided to dedicate my life to helping men rebuild their lives.

Addiction Treatment Programs

I bought a large quantity of drugs and the plan was to kill myself. Individuals who are in recovery cannot allow themselves to become overwhelmed. By this, I mean not taking on too many tasks at one time.

H.A.L.T. stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, and Tired. When things are bad, one of the factors is the root cause of the triggers and cravings you are feeling. You must examine yourself to see if you fall into one of these four categories. Remember, doing a H.A.L.T. check-in will not solve all your issues.

Not a Betrayal – an Affirmation of Life

I moved into a sober house that had a culture of recovery and lived there for 18 months. Afterwards I went back to school to become a drug and alcohol counselor. Shortly after graduation, the first recovery house was opened. We are dedicated to helping individuals in early recovery rebuild their lives. Morrissey also works with other organizations like Strathmore House that provide recovery services for people transitioning out of inpatient treatment facilities. February 4, 2008, I made a call to a drug dealer; I was hopeless and wanted to die.

Recovery Supports

There are numerous times when they will take on as many projects as they can handle, regardless of the circumstances. The problem with this could be something to burn them out. Individuals who are in recovery must learn to be willing to pace themselves. Just as recovery is one day at a time, you must be willing to take on your tasks one at a time and not allow yourself to overdo things.

The best part about cultivating new friends is that they will fill the void left by leaving your past behind. No longer looking in the rearview mirror, your vision is clear to move forward in recovery. Another way is that individuals must be willing to help others, so they/ can help themselves.
